Since most of us are now in lock down and cabin fever is creeping in, I thought I would share 3 fun and healthy recipes to cook with your kids. Cooking with your kids is a great way to teach them both the life/cooking skills and also about making healthy food choices. It may get a bit messy and take a little bit longer but we have a bit more time to keep our little ratbags entertained so why not try it.

Meika and I have been making food together since she was about two and she absolutely loves it. She is also more inclined to try the new foods that we have made because she has achieved something in creating it, and it spikes her curiosity.

Here’s some recipes that we have made over the last few days in lock down:

Blueberry and lemon/lime gummies

Gummies are great at healing and soothing the gut lining due to the gelatin in the recipe. Kids generally love the berries and the lemon or lime juice is a great source of vitamin C. You can get fun moulds online from ebay, Amazon or Kmart. You don’t need them though, you can just pour into a glass container and set in the fridge. They are great as a snack for the afternoon when your kids get hungry before dinner.

Healthy Berry Chocolates

Healthy Homemade chocolate with raspberries or blueberries

Chocolate is just so much fun for the kids to make. Meika has an absolute blast and makes a fair amount of mess too. She helps line the moulds with berries in between stuffing them in her mouth. Then she helps to pour the chocolate in and eats half of that too. You’ll see in the recipe there are a range of choices to flavour your chocolates. You can use berries, nuts, coconut or essential oils. You can even just keep them plain. Whatever you have at home is fine!

Easy Sauerkraut

We made cheats sauerkraut using coconut water kefir this week. The good thing about this is it’s ready in a couple of days. Meika has been eating sauerkraut since she was a littlen. I was surprised by how much she loved it. It’s a good idea to start off really slow if your kids are new to ferments, they may take a bit to get used to it but just keep in encouraging them.

If you don’t have the Kultured Wellness Kefir than you can make it the old fashioned way fashioned way (we do both) by following this recipe here by my friend over at Honestly Natural.
